CONSUMER INFORMATION & ANTI-STEERING LAW
AS TO THE GROUND RULES NOW IN PLACE UNDER CALIFORNIA’S
ANTI-STEERING LAW, AB 1200 DOES NOT:

Eliminate the prohibition on insurance companies requiring people to use the car repair
facilities of the insurer’s choosing.

Eliminate the current rule that an insurer can only recommend a body shop if either the
customer requests a referral or they are provided a statement in writing telling the customer
they have a right to choose a body shop of their choice.

Change the duty, set out in the current anti-steering law, that an insurer must repair the
vehicle so it is restored to its condition prior to the loss at no additional cost to the claimant
other than as stated in the policy or otherwise guided by law.

Eliminate the prohibition insurers are subject to that once a claimant has indicated they have
made a choice of a body shop, the insurer shall not continue to suggest or recommend that
the customer selects a different one.
